For Colored Girls

Tyler Perry has taken a walk on the dark side with For Colored Girls, a movie based on Ntozke Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, a series of poems which were published in 1975.

An all star cast included Janet Jackson, Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Tessa Thompson, Kerry Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, Macy Gray, and Loretta Devine.  Each actress played the heck out of their role.  Seeing the talented actors in this film makes me remember just how many talented African-American actors are out there—hope to keep seeing more of them.

The darkness included scenes involving the heavy topics of rape, infidelity, domestic violence, and mental illness.  It’s interesting how the same issues that Shange wrote about in 1975 are, unfortunately, very much alive in our communities, today.

I give this film a B+.
