Dr. Oz Discusses Genetically Modified Foods

In food, Health on December 7, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Today, on The Dr. Oz Show, Dr. Oz and his guests discussed Genetically Modified Foods.  There is controversy over whether or not GMO foods are safe for human consumption.

To me, the words, “genetically modified” just don’t sound right; anything modified is not the same.  And, I certainly don’t want to ingest chemically altered food.

Proponents of GMO foods say there aren’t any negative effects from ingesting GMO foods.  But, there haven’t been any studies into the long term effects of GMO foods in humans.  I can hear it—God forbid—ten or twenty years from now:  “GMO foods have been shown to be linked to Cancer in humans.”

GMO foods have been banned in European countries.  I respect the fact that Europe is trying to protect their citizens from the unknown.

Why take the chance?  As usual, in the U.S., it’s about money; more cheaply produced products equal more money for the food manufacturing industries.  But, at what cost to the consumer?

In the near future, I do hope that food manufacturers will be required to clearly label whether or not a food has been genetically modified.  The consumer should be allowed to make the decision as to if they want to buy a GMO food or a Non-GMO food.
